February
A few genealogy enthusiasts
gathered in the living room of Margaret Henderson to talk about the
"How-To" of genealogy
research. During this meeting, Paul Bontemps, professor emeritus
of Black History and Literature at MIT, Simmons College and Wellesley
College, encouraged the group to start a New England Chapter of AAHGS.
April 5
The first meeting was held
at the Waltham National Archives & Records Administration
(NARA) through the efforts of the new archivist, Stacie Scarver.
May 17
During a meeting held at the
Bedford Town Center, Paul Bontemps, Margaret Henderson and Stacie
Scarver were elected as Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of the
Steering Committee, respectively.
June
A request to be accepted as
a chapter was submitted to the AAHGS National organization with a list
of charter members.
August 15
Death of Paul Bontemps.
August 16
John Moore became acting
chapter President.
1998
February
Notification was received
from National AAHGS that New England had been accepted as an Official
Chapter.
2002
August
5th Anniversary of the
Afro-American Historical & Genealogical Society, New England
Chapter.
