Jazzy Vegetarian host Laura Theodore brings plant View full sizeJOE ORECCHIOLaura Theodore, host of "Jazzy Vegetarian," a new national PBS show that s being produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting. When you look through the program schedules at all the cooking shows on cable TV these days, you notice that there are something like 47 cake and cupcake competitions, and that food trucks and carts are seriously over exposed. But when it comes to vegetarian cooking, there s only a smattering of attention at places like the Food Network and the Cooking Channel, and that vegans are left out in the cold, which is strange given the growing mainstream acceptance of both approaches to eating. That changes at last! with the arrival of the nike free woman new public television series "Jazzy Vegetarian," which is produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting and begins airing nationally this month. The 13 episode first season stars Laura Theodore, who hosts a Web radio program with the same name, and who is an actual jazz singer herself, hence the show s "Jazzy" title. Recipe included with this story: Festive Zucchini Lasagna. There have been a few vegan TV shows in the past, but Theodore says she wants to show how plant based eating can be homey and delicious, and anything but fringe. "There needs to be a show that takes classic American meals and makes them vegan," she says. "A show where anybody can look at it and say, That s something I make on a regular basis, and now I can make it vegan for my family, and they re going to love it. " We caught up with her recently at her home in New Jersey, and got her thoughts about the new TV show, her approach to cooking and the connections between music and cooking. Saturdays, beginning Oct. 15 Your show is called "Jazzy Vegetarian," yet everything you make is vegan. Is there a reason you re staying away from that word? After all, you do use it on the show. We ve been working on "Jazzy Vegetarian" since 2005, and when the concept was born, we were afraid to say "Jazzy Vegan" it just nike air max tn didn t sound right. Of course, in the last five or six years that word has become accepted, but we re already known as "Jazzy Vegetarian." In fact, the true sense of the word "vegetarian," in its original concept, was what we call vegan now. Through the 50s and 60s, there came to be the pescetarians, the semi vegetarians, the fruitatarians, and all the tarians, which confused things. Describe your approach to cooking. My approach is an extension of my mother s, my grandmother s and even my great grandmother s cooking. I began cooking with my grandmother when cheap nike air max 2013 I was about 3 or 4 years old. She d put me up on a stool and we d make applesauce from apples she d picked in her backyard. She taught me to cook and I loved to eat her food as a child, and I loved all of her classic recipes. One of my favorites has become the first episode of the show. My mother and my grandmother both made lasagna, and when I became a vegetarian in 1981, there just weren t any recipes (for that dish). I started taking all of these family recipes and started making them vegan. And then I started taking the recipes that I had collected as a cook and made them vegan. And then I just started coming up with my own new things that I felt reflected the taste of classic American food. What is it you love about that zucchini lasagna recipe? It metamorphosed itself over the span of 30 years. Grandma, who s no longer with us, wrote me that recipe it was regular lasagna, and I made it the way she made it. When I became a vegetarian, I looked at this recipe and realized I could take out the meat and use mushrooms. And slowly over the years I started figuring out how to make the ricotta layer out of tofu, and I started experimenting with vegan cheeses and the filling. Then I realized I could make it lighter if I sliced zucchini lengthwise, and used them like noodles. My goal was to make something really tasty and moist, and I must say I did go through a lot of experimenting before I came to this recipe. Vegan cooking is such a growing trend. Why aren t we seeing more of it on TV? When you turn on the Food Network, you re not getting the information that vegetarian and vegan cooking tastes good. I think maybe I can spread some awareness that s not available in these other media platforms, so people know that they can eat this way, they can live this way, it s easy to do, you can buy it at your supermarket. If you cook for yourself, you can go into your kitchen and make these recipes for your family, and they re just as good. Catch up on Grant Butler s ongoing exploration of vegan living. You have six solo CDs. Tell me about the music side of your world. It s a long story. I started singing at the age of 3. I ve always loved singing. I began taking music classes and acting classes, and I studied and studied. I became an actor air max classic at a very young age, and then I got into jazz and moved to New York and started working the clubs as a singer. I still have an interesting career. My last CD a couple of years ago was a duo CD with the late, great Joe Beck. It s just me and Joe doing Peggy Lee tunes. Do you draw a connection between music and cooking? It s a complete connection. When I sing, the song is never the same way twice. When I go into the kitchen and I start making a recipe, it has the same feeling as improvising in jazz, because I m improvising the ingredients, especially when I m taking a traditional recipe and making it vegan. That s what s exciting to me! When I m creating a recipes, it s like I m writing jordan air max and arranging a song it s the same process. What do you like to listen to when you re cooking? I like to listen to the birds outside. When I m cooking, I don t like to listen to music because then I start thinking about how I would arrange it. We live in a woodsy area, so I like to open the windows and listen to the outdoors. Jesus Tomb nike free trainer 7.0 Controversy Rages as Archaeologists Explore Another 2000 Archaeologists working in Jerusalem claim that a discovery they made inside a burial tomb, dating back to the time of Jesus Christ, could nike free run womens sale shed new light on the origins of Christianity. Biblical historian James Tabor, professor and chair of religious studies at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, is working with the team, led by controversial filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici. Using a camera mounted on a robotic arm, the team found a 2,000 year old engraving, which they claim depicts Jesus resurrection, on an ossuary a limestone burial box that contains human bones in a first century tomb. ET/PT. "It s almost like a moonscape feeling of something eerie, something kind of nike air max white silent a reverent feeling really," Tabor said. "Because these people died 2,000 years ago and now we are investigating their last memories, how they bury their dead, what they left behind, so that was there and then the excitement of, Well will there be something we ll find or will we find just another Jewish tomb ?" But the team thinks they found something much more than that. Tabor believes the engraving found on the ossuary depicts the Biblical story of Jonah, who was swallowed by a whale in the Book of Jonah. For many Christians, the Old Testament story of Jonah and the whale has come to symbolize the resurrection of Jesus. If the engraving is of Jonah, as Tabor believes, he said it would be the earliest Christian symbol of resurrection ever found. However, many biblical scholars don t see it that way at all. Mark Goodacre, an associate professor of religious studies at Duke University, who specializes in the New Testament, says there are other, far more likely, explanations as to what the engraving could be, such as a vase with handles. "When is a fish not a fish? When it has handles, matching handles," he said. "It s a vessel. air max 87 It s a vase. It s a vase that looks like many of the ones that you ll find in the early Roman period." Yet Jacobovici and his colleagues believe that ancient Greek letters found on another ossuary a few feet away from the engraving also refer to resurrection. "Now nike air dt max 96 whether they were saying he rose or we will rise, we can argue about it, but the finds themselves are hard archaeology that show, you know, new light, shed new light on the big bang of Christianity," Jacobovici said.
