1950s Jewelry Perfume Jewelry in the 50s went a very classic route. You wanted classic gems and simple pieces. It wasn t particularly ornate, and a good example would be diamond stud earrings. You can see how I have them in either ear. They were very simple, they complemented without taking away from the hairdo. Another piece would be a single pendant necklace like this one, this one has some amethyst in it. Very simple. No draping jewelry, a simple choker, simple studs, nothing particularly ornate. You really wanted it to be a clean and simple line. And in keeping with that, as far as perfume goes, the perfume industry wasn t nearly as large as it is today in the 50s. It was mostly luxury brands that were making different kinds of perfume. I have an example: this is nike free 3.0 pink the Chanel Coco Mademoiselle. Actually the most popular fragrance in the 1950s was another air max 1 Chanel fragrance, Chanel No.5. They both were really classic lines and they went along with a designer that most women knew well. As the women s fashion industry nike air max 90 white was expanding after the war, people really looked to rely on brand names to pick things up. So they would look for brand name jewelry, cheap air max 95 they would look for brand name perfume, and that was really where you wanted to go. And you wanted it to be very simple once again. The 50s, it was about being a lady so along with what we talked about with the make up, you wouldn t want a really ornate perfume that was too exotic or drew too nike free shipping much attention to you.

1950s Pencil Dress Skirt The second popular silhouette of the fifty s, which was more popular in the later part of the decade is similar to what I am wearing now. It was called the pencil silhouette. This is a pencil skirt, it goes around the hips and in towards the bottom and the top would be form fitting and emphasize the waist. And this was sort of a modified hour glass. Instead of going out at the waist and out at the shoulders it was more streamlined but still emphasized the waist and indicated a really womanly figure. It s really important also to remember that under any of these styles, women would be wearing girdles, which sort of pushed you in in the middle and nike free runs created an hour glass shape. So you can see this clothing is very tight as was the dior new look that I showed you before and it was really, really, really important to have the waist. If you didn t naturally have a figure that had a waist, you needed to create one. Another example of the pencil skirt and this one actually is from the fifties, nike free clearance is this right here. You can see how small the waist is up here. This is approximately twenty three inch waist, which is tiny. And it makes room, you can see nike air max essential it makes room for the hip how it goes out and then comes back in. This is also in a really nice color, which is something we haven t talked about yet. The red nike air max fifties use of color was really important but it was generally limited to one piece in an outfit. You ll also notice the length of it, the one I m wearing is actually a little bit shorter then it would womens nike free have been in the fifties. But this one would go below the knees as would the higher ones and the new look skirts. Because you still want it to be a lady but you can see that we are moving towards a more formed fitting style.

1950s Shoes My favorite part of almost every decade is talking about the shoes because they re really beautiful and the 50s really started to get glamorous with shoes. So, in the 40s you had had rationing on leather because air max 90 of the war and in the 50s the evening shoe became really popular and heels were the standard. We ve seen in some movies big saddle shoes nike air max 1 black but really we re talking about women s fashion and not girls fashion. And so, towards the beginning you might have seen a shoe like this, in the beginning air max premium of the 50s. It s an open toe pump and it has a thicker heel, and this is reminiscent of the heels that were popular in 30s and 40s which were chunkier and lower. But you can see it s already starting to get higher. nike free 6.0 This is about a 3 and a 1/2 inch heel. It also has some detailing on it of the shimmer, which is reminiscent of the make up that we talked about. You wouldn t wear a shimmer necessarily in a day dress but you could wear it in a shoe. And also, these are in a fairly neutral color. nike air max 2012 So these would be a really great accent to an outfit. Now towards the later part of the 50s, we get into stiletto heels, which are still really popular today. These are not necessarily a fabric that would have been used then but the style is completely 50s. The heel is actually a four inch heel, it s a little bit thinner than the other one, it s an open toed sandal and it s a very small, streamlined shoe. And this is exactly the kind of shoe that one would wear in the 50s. It maybe wouldn t be as shiny, but it would definitely be a nice summer evening shoe. Stiletto heels really came into their own in the 50s and wearing interesting fabrics, and incredibly popular.

1950s twist for 1870s Anna Karenina Jacqueline Durran painstakingly pored over paintings and photos from the 19th century to prepare for designing the elaborate fashions featured on the big screen in Anna Karenina. But the costume designer said director Joe Wright had his own take on interpreting 1870s Russian style for the film adaptation of the classic novel and exact fashion replicas of the era weren t chief among them. "The only nike running free costumes that are really an attempt to be accurate of the period are the Russian peasant costumes; the other costumes are all stylized," Durran said in a phone interview from London. "Joe particularly wanted me to concentrate on the silhouette of each character, and that s what he thought was important to bring out in our interpretation." To best nike air max 90 womens illustrate his vision, Wright encouraged Durran to embark on a fashionable flash forward, particularly for the costumes worn by the title character portrayed by Keira Knightley. "He wanted me to reference 50s couture which has a very strong silhouette and combined that approach with the 1870s shape," said Durran, who studied pieces from famed nike air max online labels including Balenciaga, Christian Dior, Jacques Fath and Lanvin. The onscreen results showcase a series of jaw droppingly lavish dresses befitting Russian aristocracy, with a succession of fluid yet fitted floor sweeping gowns. Yet while drawing on decades old styles for fashionable inspiration, there s a timelessness to the luxe furs, trimmed coats, lace veils, feathered headpieces and asymmetric detailing on dresses that seems quite in step with contemporary nike free run mens fashion. "Joe s very much interested in that. He s not particularly interested in historic recreations," said Durran. "He s interested in taking a style and making it believably of a period, but making it accessible to a modern audience." Durran previously worked with Wright and Knightley on Atonement and Pride and Prejudice, cheap nike free run shoes earning costume design Oscar nods for both period dramas. For Atonement, Wright was equally vocal with input on and specifics for the famous silk emerald green dress worn by Knightley in the film. "He wanted it to have a very full hem and a low back and all those things," Durran said. "Even though all the elements in the dress are from the period, when you re combine them in a different way, you re not making a period dress. It would look completely out of place. "It s the same with this [film], really," she added. "You re combining elements and you re mixing things up; and if you actually put them next to a period costume, they look completely modern, but they have the spirit of the period." Durran said her style vision for Anna Karenina was centred on conveying a sense of elegance, opulence and wealth. That could also explain the integration of millions of dollars worth of Chanel baubles to accessorize the luxurious onscreen looks. "That s what I took from 50s couture, really, is that you can take away all of the surface detail and just be left with this really strong silhouette, which is so chic, so accomplished, so sophisticated, that I kind of thought that was what was an aspect of Anna." Also key to the lead character was showcasing her sensuality and sex appeal, as the film finds Karenina caught between commitment to her stern yet devoted husband Alexei Karenin (Jude Law) and passion for her playboy lover Count Vronsky (Aaron Taylor Johnson). Durran said conveying that aspect of the character through costume was "important to the idea of Anna." "There s a mention in the novel about how her dress frames her beauty rather than it being about the beauty of the dress," she said. "I think I kept that in mind quite a lot, because it was about revealing her beauty more than anything. And she s a very sexual person in the film, so the two things probably go together."
